Peter Gabriel's October update
Herding cats and Lighthouse Keepers' parties all get a mention. Peter's back on your screens this October with the news that whilst there has been a brief outage here, others have been hard at work- it seems some satirical fun is being poked at the Moon Club.
Other news includes a look back at WOMAD Charlton Park, where Peter aired material from the forthcoming 'Scratch My Back' project in public for the first time. There's more on that project and other new music from Speed Caravan, Portico Quartet and David Rhodes amongst others. Recollections from the amazing Polar Music Prize award ceremony where Peter was presented with his award by His Majesty King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden for 'groundbreaking, outward - looking and boundary-busting artistry'. This years other award winner, the Venezuelan conductor, composer and economist José Antonio Abreu is also discussed along with a new campaign to improve the rights of musicians - The Featured Artists Coalition.
Speed Caravan 'Kalashnik Love' Released Today

Today 'Kalashnik Love' by Speed Caravan is released in the UK on Real World Records. The album is available to purchase from our store.
"Electrified, amplified and fuelled by creative fire, the Paris-based quartet charge towards a psychedelic horizon; slaloming through rock, dance, electro, hiphop, world and other music - blazing a trail with raised fists, a hand brake turn and a sharp spray of desert sand...Mehdi Haddab is a virtuoso of the classical oud, that fretless Arabic lute beloved of Middle Eastern orchestras and an instrument with a history stretching back over 5,000 years...Speed Caravan's debut album Kalashnik Love combines tradition and future, ancient and urban, beauty and fury to stun-gunning effect. Laden with special guests and throbbing with raw rock energy it references everyone from The Cure and The Chemical Brothers to Algerian rai and other Arabic influences. The sublime result of several year's worth of incendiary live touring, it is fusion - but not (hurrah!) as we know it."

David Rhodes releases 'Bittersweet'
Until now David's been more than content to be the supporting artist in the shadows, a few paces back from the main attraction. As well as his lengthy tenure on the shoulder of Peter Gabriel, David's also been an in-demand session player, his fluid guitar lines adorning the records of Tim Finn, Talk Talk, Paul McCartney, T-Bone Burnett and even Roy Orbison. Then there's the sizeable soundtrack work he undertakes with musical partner Richard Evans, much of it for documentaries on the Discovery Channel and National Geographic. But Bittersweet is the turning of a crisp new page, a fresh chapter whose plot has yet to be written.

Remembering Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan
Sunday 16th August marked the 12th anniversary of the death of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, also known as Shahen-Shah-e-Qawwali which translates as 'The Brightest Star in Qawwali'.
Qawwali music is a form of Sufi devotional music popular in South Asia with a tradition which stretches back for hundreds of years. It is a primarily vocal music with eight or nine singers accompanied by one or two harmoniums and percussion. The best Qawwali draws and holds the audience's attention, altering the listener's state of consciousness to make it intensely receptive of the content.
Nusrat was responsible for bringing Qawwali music from Pakistan to the Western world and this was largely due to his collaborations with many Western artists. He collaborated with Peter Gabriel for the album 'Passion: Music for The Last Temptation of Christ a film by Martin Scorsese'. Nusrat also sang with Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam on the film soundtrack to 'Dead Man Walking' exposing his unique voice to a global audience.
Nusrat has one of the largest recorded outputs of any artist with over 125 albums to his name. His collaborations on Real World Records with Michael Brook are regarded as modern classics - 1990's 'Mustt Mustt' and 'Night Song' from 1996.
The late singer Jeff Buckley was a huge fan and referred to Nusrat as "My Elvis".
Nusrat's voice and music continue to enrapture and entertain audiences worldwide and his legacy lives on, inspiring artists from all different creative backgrounds.
